Black Acacia (Acacia melanoxylon), also known as Australian Blackwood among other names. It’s native to eastern Australia and tends to be a tenacious species that grows well throughout the world as well as here in Northern California. It’s highly valued as a cabinet timber, for musical instruments, or in boat-building.
It has a luminosity & depth similar to Mahogany, it’s heartwood a golden to dark brown with chocolate growth rings. The name ‘black acacia’ is attributed to dark stains on woodworkers hands caused by the high level of tannin in the wood.
